Jaxom and Ruth set out to discover Pern and themselves. Their growth to adulthood leads them into brave actions, and they prevent a war between dragons and their riders. Jaxom catches a major illness and while being cured finds the woman he wants as his companion. Knowing this, he takes the necessary steps to be confirmed as the Lord Holder of Ruatha.
